Business Technology presents Architect Competition 2009

Introduction

Business Technology proudly presents Architect Competition 2009, organized by Enterprise Architecture Forum. We invite aspiring and practicing IT architects to deploy their skill to solve a compelling real-world problem. The competition tests architects’ ability to automate a manual and time-consuming transaction. The idea behind the competition is to challenge analytical, conceptual and technical capabilities of contestants. For more information on the contest, please see FAQs below.

The Problem

Banks have gone digital with ATMs, online transactions, credit cards and other IT tools. But a bulk of their transactions is still predominantly handled through “CHEQUES”, which involve manual effort.
Cheques issued by customers are subject to realization through inter-bank transactions. It usually takes 2 to 3 days of clearing time as banks need time to exchange and process the cheques.

Overview

Today in this modern world with different technologies and platforms we aim at process efficiency and speed in every walk of life. In a typical banking scenario, ATMs, interbank transfers, payments, credit cards etc have reached an amazing growth level in the last few decades.

Problem Statement

One instrument in today’s Banking scenario which is still predominantly handled by manual effort is “CHEQUES” We all know that each bank has different formats of cheque books. Cheques issued by customers are subject to realization through interbank transactions.
Cheques take 2 to 3 days of clearing time because all bankers meet on a daily basis and exchange the different cheques received through the customers.

Definition

Design an architecture solution that is fool proof and reliable for management of Cheques.
1)The concept is crux of the solution.  The concept should be an eye opener for bankers to do things differently.
2)The solution should aim at automating the cheque processing and collection mechanism.
3) Assumptions are allowed as long as they are valid and feasible.
4) The architecture and process flow needs a technical flavor of implementation. A presentation/paper on the architecture is expected, however code is not the deliverable.
5) The solution should be an acceptable one for all banks to implement and there needs to be an ROI for the investment made.
6) The solution should simplify the current process.
