SOA – Is it finally a big business?
Axel Angeli, Logosworld, SOA Evangelist

The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from other felines, is a small carnivorous species of crepuscular mammal that is often valued by humans for its companionship and its ability to hunt vermin. It has been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years. A skilled predator, the cat is known to hunt over 1,000 species for food. It can be trained to obey simple commands.

The SOA idea has been around for over forty years now; the client-server technology became main-stream in the early 1990s and the SOA hype started in 2003. So there is now a market around Service-oriented Architecture beyond selling Middleware and ESB components. There is a pressing need for services; for services to support and monitor other services; for new hardware to support sizing of the SOA cloud and for the right consulting to make all this brave new world happen. In brief: SOA is finally a big business.

Hologramming – Holistic Management for the Computing Cloud
Axel Angeli, Logosworld, SOA Evangelist

Do not be mistaken: it is easy for most established consultants to spell out SOA and pretend to have a wonder pill to magically re-label your enterprise into a Service-oriented Architecture based institute. Service-oriented computing clouds require different project management strategies. Classical IT projects could even survive simplistic linear waterfall dogmas like SAP ASAP and PRINCE whose main goal it is to defeat and reduce complexity and constraint degrees of freedom, although they are both the bearers of the power of a system. In a cloud, complexity is required; a cloud takes its power out of the many degrees of freedoms that loosely coupling of services allow. Luckily, there are many methodologies that allow for a holistic management of chaotically communicating systems, like ground traffic control, goods logistics, weather forecasts, gas and fluid engineering, politics, multi-project management and many more. They all serve as role model for a holistic management and governance methodology to better steer and supervise the evolution of SOA and clouds in a more and more powerful, complex IT ecosystem inside and outside the enterprise limits. We have blended all those proven strategies from other areas of expertise, matched them with IT specifics, added the ideas of agile development and SCRUM and given the baby a name: A methodology based on contracts, standard operation procedures and common practice and of passive intervention and risk containment – Hologramming.

Interoperability: Opening Up Opportunities in a World of Choice and a Time of Change
Ramkumar Kothandaraman, Microsoft

Application interoperability is the single most important issue facing most enterprise software architects. For business, interoperability is crucial as it provides more IT flexibility to choose between hardware / software; more business agility to connect between productivity applications or customers and vendors; and better cost efficiencies by leverage existing investments in hardware / software. The businesses that manage this well, and the IT companies that help them do so, are the ones that will excel.

Architecting Cloud Solutions for Windows Azure
Vikram Rajkondawar, Microsoft

Session Abstracts :- Architecting and designing solutions for cloud-based platforms require approaches different from non-cloud platforms. Designing for container headroom, latency, identity, role synchronization and application configuration are critical design considerations. In this session, Vikram discusses emerging approaches to architecting cloud-based applications using Windows Azure platform as the demonstration environment. His presentation would meet following Objectives: 1) Understand challenges to architecting solutions for the cloud 2) Understand how to design for cloud architecture challenges using Windows Azure 3) Understand how we currently implement highly available, high scalable and managed cloud applications for customers.

Software + Services : The Convergence of SaaS, SOA & Web 2.0
Sachin Vinod Rathi, Microsoft

In a nutshell, Software + Services is about combining and enhancing on-premise software with hosted and cloud based services. This session explores the concept of S+S based solutions from a consumer and provider perspective. We look at the solutions and services from a delivery, experience and economical standpoint and discuss some prominent service offerings in more detail

A Business-Techno Perspective of Good, Bad & Neutral Practices of SOA
Sandeep J. Alur, Microsoft

SOA has been such a buzz word which every Enterprise aspires to embrace or wary of getting associated. Customer’s experience in driving SOA initiatives for an Enterprise is unique and varies in magnitude and intensity. While all of us do understand the myths & the associated facts related to SOA, often the perception takes the driver seat in channelizing efforts in embracing SOA. Enterprises are often found in the midst of heterogeneity leading to adoption of multiple platforms and technologies. While this is an indication of natural evolution of an Enterprise, lot can be inferred from such variant display of technology implants. When Enterprises witness the influx of such technologies & platforms, they land up with challenges in the area of Enterprise Integration. It is important for Enterprises to bring in the element of ‘Agility’ into their IT landscape, so as to address aspects like maintainability, support & ease of operations. In this session, we will delve into some of the Good, Bad & Neutral Practices of SOA in the view of Business & Technology

Cloud Integration and Composition
Pethuru Raj Chelliah, SOA specialist, Wipro Technologies

The growing adoption of software as a service (SaaS) applications by enterprises has been driven by the deep dissatisfaction with on-premise applications, which require institutions, innovators, and individuals to purchase and deploy infrastructures and to pay for expensive and enlightened resources for customizations, upgrades, and on-going maintenance. The large upfront investments combined with unpredictable costs and an immeasurable return on investment has prompted organizations to seek cheaper and less-risky alternatives. Many have found that SaaS applications, which require minimal or no infrastructure and maintenance can be deployed quickly and have a predictable cost model representing less risk and a faster return on investment, are the best fit. In short, SaaS in sync with underlying cloud infrastructures and platforms means less TCO and high ROI. This new demand has led to rapid innovations in SaaS applications, SaaS platforms, third-party SaaS add-ons, and SaaS integration tools. However SaaS integration is not that easy and hence there are SaaS integration best practices, integration technologies and product suites. In this talk, I would like to insist why fully automated cloud integration is very inspirational and imperative for cloud-based improvisations. How clouds facilitate creation and sustenance of business-aware and aligned composite applications, services, data, views and processes is being discussed. I would like to present the latest trends in cloud integration and composition disciplines.

Integration-as-a-Service

SOA and the Web Business Platforms
Dr. Harshavardhan Jegadeesan, Project Manager, SAP

Web businesses such as eBay®, Amazon® and a whole lot of others have long ceased to be mere websites; they have morphed into web business platforms. By adopting a platform strategy, they are building an ecosystem of developers, partners and entrepreneurs to build innovative applications for customers. In this session, we discuss the significance of and associated issues in adopting a SOA strategy to open-up these platforms for the ecosystem.

Public Cloud Management Across Multiple Cloud Vendors: Bringing Public Clouds to Enterprises
Vinod Shintre, Founder, Architect @Attribo

Cloud being the only way to achieve virtualization for a vast majority of IT end users & given that there are already plenty of public cloud vendors who make it possible for you to deploy your IT initiatives on a virtual environment it adds to more challenge in terms of manageability & automation issues related to your cloud infrastructure. This is where cloud automation & management solutions helps you manage & automate your IT processes & streamline cloud utilization while burning less CPU cycles & dedicated manpower, not to mention drastic reduction in CAPEX & OPEX. In brief the more you consolidate & integrate your cloud usage via a single management console the more seamless it will bring in Cloud Control to your fingertips & with built in enterprise ready features you stand to gain extra mileage.
